Guide
WhatsApp quietly collects more storage than almost any other app: every photo, video, voice note and sticker from every chat. Here's how to get that space back without losing your messages.

Quick answer: open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage to delete large and frequently forwarded files chat by chat. Then turn off auto-download so it doesn't fill up again. To clear media you sent, old media and duplicate copies across all chats at once, use a storage cleaner like Mopie. Deleting media never deletes your chat messages.
WhatsApp has a free built-in tool, and it's the right place to start.
Its limits: it works chat by chat, it can't tell you which media you sent versus received, it doesn't group by age (for example "older than a year"), and it doesn't find duplicate copies of the same file.
Mopie is an Android storage cleaner by FourC Tech. Its WhatsApp tab looks at all the media WhatsApp has saved on your phone and sorts it in ways WhatsApp's own tool doesn't:
Every group shows how much space it frees, nothing is pre-deleted, and on Android 11 or later you can send files to Trash and restore them later. Scanning happens on your phone, so your WhatsApp media is never uploaded, and Mopie never opens your chats or messages.
On Android 11 and later, WhatsApp media lives in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media (WhatsApp Business uses com.whatsapp.w4b). You can open it in your phone's Files app and delete folders like WhatsApp Video or WhatsApp Images/Sent. This works, but you can't preview much, and it's easy to delete something you wanted, so check first.
No. Your messages stay. The deleted media will show as unavailable in the chat.
That number is mostly the chat database. Media saved to shared storage is counted separately, so clearing it frees phone storage without changing the app size much.
Usually. The other person has a copy, and photos you sent often came from your own gallery. Check before deleting anything you only have in WhatsApp.
If there's anything you can't lose, yes: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Note that deleted media won't be in future backups.
