1. Mopie – best for photos, videos and WhatsApp, privately

Mopie is our app. It focuses on the files that actually fill phones: duplicates (matched by content), similar photos and videos, blurry shots, files over 500 MB, and WhatsApp media. All scanning happens on the phone, there are no ads, no account is needed, and nothing is deleted without review. The original of each duplicate set and the best shot of each similar set stay locked.

Good: similar-video detection and a dedicated WhatsApp tab (sent media, old media, viewed statuses, WhatsApp Business separately), which few cleaners have. Built-in Trash with free restore. Scans SD cards too. Unlimited free scanning. No speed-boost claims.
Less good: it's new, with few reviews yet. It doesn't clear app caches in one tap (it shows each app's cache and opens Android's App info). No photo compression. Free users can clean up to 1 GB; beyond that needs Pro (from 8.45 AED a month, or 87.75 AED once). The first scan of a full phone takes a while (20–30 minutes on a 230 GB phone), though rescans take seconds.

2. Files by Google – best free basic cleanup

Google's own file manager has cleanup cards for junk files, duplicates, blurry or badly lit photos, large files, WhatsApp media, memes, screenshots and unused apps. It's free with no ads, and deleted files go to a 30-day Trash.

Good: free, small, trusted, and also a full file manager with offline sharing and a Safe folder.
Less good: no similar-photo or similar-video detection advertised, and its WhatsApp cleanup is less detailed. Junk clearing is permanent.

3. SD Maid SE – best for power users

SD Maid SE is an open-source system cleaner with no ads and no data collected. It finds app leftovers, caches, duplicates by checksum and, optionally, similar images, videos and audio. Root or Shizuku is optional for deeper cleaning.

Good: open source, privacy-respecting, very thorough, one-time purchase option.
Less good: technical setup, deleting caches and duplicates is paid, no blurry-photo or WhatsApp tools, no documented Trash.

4. CCleaner – broad features, with ads

CCleaner cleans junk, caches, download folders and leftovers, finds similar, bad and old photos, compresses photos, and has an app manager with battery-impact info.

Good: well-known brand, wide range of tools, photo compression, data deletion on request.
Less good: ads in the free version. Its Play Data safety section lists sharing precise location and app activity with third parties. It stops background apps, which modern Android already manages. No Trash documented.

5. Avast Cleanup – most photo tools, most "boost" claims

Avast Cleanup has the fullest photo toolkit here: duplicate, similar, blurry, dark and old photos, best-of-group, and compression, plus large files, junk cleaning and automatic cleaning.

Good: broad photo cleanup, app overview, scheduled cleaning (Premium).
Less good: ads in the free version, deep cleaning moved to Premium, shares precise location and app activity with third parties (Play Data safety), and speed and battery claims that Avast itself says may be "functionally negligible".

How to choose

Questions

Do Android phones need a cleaner app?

Not for speed. Modern Android handles RAM and background apps itself. A cleaner helps with storage: finding duplicates, similar photos, big videos and old chat media you'd never find by hand.

Which Android cleaners have no ads?

Mopie, Files by Google and SD Maid SE. CCleaner and Avast Cleanup show ads in their free versions.

Are cleaner apps safe?

The good ones are. Look for: no automatic deleting, a review step before anything is removed, a Trash or undo, and a Data safety section that matches the app's privacy claims.

Is Files by Google enough?

For many people, yes. If you have lots of near-identical photos, similar videos or WhatsApp media, a more focused tool like Mopie will usually find more.
